Your basal metabolic rate – or BMR – is a calculation based on your personal, individual body weight and energy needs. It represents the minimum amount of calories you need in order to function at rest. It’s the calories your burn while maintaining vital body functions like keeping your body temperature correct, and breathing (yes these things need calories to function!)
Its important to know your BMR, because if you are consuming less calories than you need to maintain vital functions, and then exercising on top (using even more calories) your body may go into starvation mode – a caveman-style instinct where it thinks that food is scarce and it should start storing body fat for later use. Remember, your body does not know that Waitrose is just around the corner!!
